Newly elected Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Richard Akpokavie has underscored the significance of unity and collaboration in his administration for the next four years, following his triumph in Saturday’s GOC elections.
Akpokavie, who succeeds Ben Nunoo Mensah, highlighted the importance of cohesion during his tenure, rather than discord.
“When you work as a team, you achieve results. So for me, one of the important things we need to achieve is working as a team to yield the results we want to achieve. Too many disputes, too many divisions can’t solve the problem, working as a team is very important.”
The newly appointed GOC president also stressed the importance of educating athletes, particularly on doping issues.
“There are many things we can do with them to help them understand clean sports so that we educate them on doping and anti-doping. Those things are the important things that we must do.”
Akpokavie won 44 votes, defeating his opponent Michael Aggrey, who garnered 19 votes.
A veteran sports administrator, Akpokavie previously served as the GOC’s General Secretary from 2017 to 2021 and captained Ghana’s national hockey team during his playing days.
