Newly elected Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Richard Akpokavie has laid out his vision for the next four years following his victory in Saturday’s elections.
Akpokavie, who takes over from Ben Nunoo Mensah, highlighted key priorities he intends to focus on during his tenure.
“First on my mind is athlete empowerment. The voices of athletes must be clearly heard on every committee and board because we are here for them,” he said after his election. “We also need to build the capacity of women. There are too few women involved at the board level, and that must change. Finally, there are too many disputes , we need to unite and work together as one GOC team over the next four years.” he said after the elections.
Akpokavie secured 44 votes to defeat his challenger, Michael Aggrey, who polled 19 votes.
A seasoned figure in Ghanaian sports administration, Akpokavie previously served as the GOC’s General Secretary from 2017 to 2021. As an athlete, he captained Ghana’s national hockey team during his playing days.
