Deputy Director General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Twum Barima has said the intercepted cocaine will be handled properly and ensure that they are disposed of properly when the time comes.
He urged the public to trust that nothing untoward would happen to the intercepted drugs.
“These are men of integrity, men who will not burn any curve,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, April 26.
He added “Under Mahama, you will not hear this cock and bull story that substance left our exhibit room, came back and it turned into something.”
Twum Barima further said that the cocaine that is intercepted is usually burned under heavy supervision.
This is after a court has given further direction.
“We usually burn them,” he said.
He further explained that the intercepted cocaine is kept in their exhibit rooms until the court gives further directives.
He says they cannot, on their own, decide to dispose of the drugs because they are used as exhibits in court.
“You keep them until the matter comes to a close. If tomorrow you are asked to produce them as an exhibit, what do you do?
“So we keep them until the court gives further and better directives. We have exhibit rooms where we keep them,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday April 26.
Prior to his comment, a private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Abraham Amaliba, had called on authorities to let the public know how intercepted drugs are disposed of.
He wanted to know whether these drugs are destroyed or not.
“I think that they need to tell us how these drugs are disposed of,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, April 26.
He added “I want to know what happened to the earlier consignment, have they been destroyed?”
Amaliba further said the state security agencies are doing well to arrest the drug barons in Ghana.
He wondered what the security agencies were doing in the past 8 years when there was no news of the arrest of the drug dealers.
The Director of the Road Safety Authority said, “Ghana has long been recognised as a transit point when it comes to drugs, then we became a user. In recent times, you have realised that the security agencies are doing so much work to arrest these drug barons.
“If in 3 months they can make this number of arrests, more than the past 8 years in the previous administration, is it that in the past 8 years the state agencies were not up to the task. What were they doing in the past 8 years? They were not making these arrests, and now, in just three months, they are making arrests.”
He further called on authorities to let the public know how these
On Wednesday, April 23, four individuals were arrested following the interception of a cargo shipment containing suspected cocaine by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).
The operation took place at the Swiss Port, where NACOC officials uncovered a total of seventy-three (73) slabs of a concealed substance believed to be cocaine.
The suspected narcotics, weighing approximately 89.74 kilograms, were reportedly being packaged for export to the Netherlands.
Authorities say the interception was a result of intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing international drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
The four suspects, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, are currently in NACOC custody as investigations continue.
