Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has suggested that top-class persons must be selected to be members of the economic management team.
These persons, he said, must possess leadership skills and qualities because leadership is not just about the president.
Speaking as a guest at the Executive Leadership Retreat in Ada, Ghana, on Thursday, April 24, he observed that most African countries lack top-class people as members of their economic management team.
“Getting competent hands to man major departments of government is critical, and it is lacking in most of our counties,” he said.
He added, “The economic team must be made up of top-class people, and they too must lead because leadership is not the president alone, the ministers, the junior ministers, and all holding executive positions.”
Mr Jonatnan further described the four-year presidential term in Ghana and Nigeria as inadequate.
He said “In Nigeria and Ghana, our tenure for the president is so short. In Africa, it is only Nigeria and Ghana have a four-year tenure of presidency. Most countries have five years. What can somebody do in four years?
“If you are a new person and you just came in, you need about a year before you will adjust. You work for two years, the next year is an election year. So time to really move your country is very limited.”
