Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) Malik Basintale, has lauded the government initiative, the Work Abroad Programme aimed at providing employment opportunities abroad for skilled workers.
The initiative, led by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment together with the Ghanaian-European Centre and European labour institutions.
According to Basintale the Programme has the potential to tackle youth unemployment and make Ghana a hub for skilled labour export.
“I stand before you today filled with immense optimism and excitement as we officially launch the Work Abroad Programme, a groundbreaking initiative that hold the potential to transform the lives of Ghanaian youth and strategically position our nation as a hub for skilled and ethical labour export,” he said.
He noted that the initiative will unlock doors for “Ghanaian professionals, artisans and skilled workers to showcase their expertise on the global stage while ensuring their rights and welfare remain protected.”
He further dismissed claims that the initiative could lead to brain drain.
“The YEA is instituting a comprehensive reintegration and community impact programme that will ensure that when our workers go they shall return home and when they return home, we shall tap into their skills, experiences, financial resources to reinvest in Ghana’s development,” he clarified.
Malik Basintale disclosed that President shall in the coming days launch an inter-ministerial working committee to oversee the smooth administration and sustainability of the Work Abroad Programme.
Taking his turn to address the audience at the launch, Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, said the programme provides a strategic approach to tackle youth unemployment.
“The future of labour mobility lies in legal and organised migration. We cannot allow our young people to take life-threatening risks through irregular routes. This programme offers a safe, well-regulated alternative,” he said.
Dr Pelpuo assured that the government would closely monitor the programme to maintain transparency and prevent the exploitation of Ghanaian workers abroad.
“The Work Abroad Programme provides a lawful pathway for Ghanaians to access global job markets. We will ensure that every worker who participates is protected and fully benefits from the opportunity,” he said.
