An educationist, Alhaji Haruna Tetteh Mensah, has urged the committee set up to plan the National Education Forum to proffer comprehensive reforms to enhance Ghana’s educational sector.
He anticipates the committee’s work to deliver practical and implementable solutions to bridge the existing gaps in Ghana’s education system.
President John Dramani Mahama, on February 2 appointed an eight-member committee to organize a National Education Forum.
The Committee, led by Professor George K. T. Oduro, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, has been tasked to conduct review of the education sector and propose steps to roll out an equitable, sustainable, and high-quality education system relevant to national development planning needs.
Alhaji Haruna Tetteh Mensah, founder and General Secretary of Odupong Kpehe Market Retailers Association, speaking in an interview with Onua News expressed optimism in the committee to submit an extensive report and action plan to help develop the education sector.
He encouraged the committee to ensure that President Mahama’s idea of enrolling Private Schools into the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy introduced by the erstwhile Akufo Addo- administration is maintained.
“I would want to encourage the chairman of this committee, Professor Oduro to ensure that the idea of the president that private schools will also be embodied in the current system is properly maintained”.
That would make parents who have their children in those schools very happy as well as easing the pressure on public schools in terms of admission, he maintained.
He has urged the committee to maintain and protect the Free SHS policy so that no fees will be proposed in their report for parents to pay.
He likewise entreated the general public, especially parents to reject claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is going to cancel the Free SHS policy.
