Unknown gunmen stormed the residence of former Hohoe Member of Parliament, John Peter Amewu, on Wednesday, March 5, claiming to be acting on “orders from above.”
According to Mr. Amewu, the assailants identified themselves as bailiffs and alleged that he was not properly elected as an MP in the 2020 elections.
They insisted they were there to serve him a notice questioning the legitimacy of his election and the constitutionality of the Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) that governed the process.
“They said they were there to serve me a notice because I was not duly elected in 2020, hence their decision to serve me. And that the C.I. was not constitutional,” Mr. Amewu said in an interview on Citi FM.
At the time of the invasion, Mr. Amewu was not at home, but some of his supporters were present. The intruders reportedly fired warning shots, triggering a brief confrontation with locals.
Authorities have yet to provide details on the identity of the attackers or the specific nature of their alleged orders.
However, Mr. Amewu has confirmed that his supporters in Hohoe have reported the incident to the police.
Despite the armed invasion, Mr. Amewu has declined police protection, raising concerns about the security situation. He also questioned the state of Ghana’s democracy, emphasizing the alarming nature of the attack.
“If this is the direction our democracy is heading, then it raises serious concerns,” he stated.
