Many households in Liati Wote, a community in the Afadjato South District of the Volta region have been rendered homeless following a devastating rainstorm that has hit the community.
About fifty houses have been ripped off or collapsed leaving many residents without roof over their heads.
The devastating rainstorm which hit the community on Friday, February 28, 2025 began at about 6:00pm destroying many houses with close to 200 residents rendered homeless.
Residents say the storm has left them helpless and are appealing for support.
“We need roofing sheets, iron rods and a lot to fix our houses back. We are currently perching with friends and relatives, so we are appealing to the government to help us,” a resident, Gloria Osei said.
Member of Parliament for the area, Frank Afriyie, who toured the community on Monday has joined calls for an immediate intervention from government for the victims.
He said, “these people who are farmers already had a terrible season last year due to the issue of climate change which affected their productivity and impacted their living conditions, so this disaster has only exacerbated their situation.”
“I have come with my team to support them but looking at the magnitude of the situation, I want to appeal to government, benevolent organizations and NGOs to come to the aid of the victims,” the MP added.
The MP’s team included personnel from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) who took time to assess the situation and gathered the necessary data on the affected victims.
“We have done initial assessment of the situation and now that we have the data and figures, we are going to forward same to national headquarters so in good time, we are sure they are going to respond, they will know what to give them in the form of relief so that they can resettle,” Gilbert Gray, Volta regional Director of Operations, NADMO told the media.
In the meantime, the MP, Mr Frank Afriyie has made a donation of some food items and cash to support the victims as calls intensify on government to run to the aid of the affected families.
