Newly appointed Technical Advisor for the Black Stars, Winfried Schafer, has issued a clarion call for unity within the Ghanaian national team, urging the players to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal.
With crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar looming, Schafer emphasized the importance of a cohesive unit in achieving success.
The men’s senior national team, currently second in Group I with nine points, are poised to take on Chad and Madagascar in the March international window.
Schafer, in his inaugural interview with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), stressed that Ghana’s sights are firmly set on securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
Following a dismal 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign, which saw Ghana fail to qualify for the tournament for the first time in two decades, the team has been reeling from a crisis of confidence. Schafer’s call to arms is aimed at revitalizing the team’s spirit and fostering a sense of unity among the players.
“It’s not about individual brilliance; it’s about collective effort,” Schafer emphasized. “The best teams, not the best players, win matches. We need to instill a sense of pride in wearing the Ghanaian jersey. We must work tirelessly to support our players, show them respect, and create a conducive environment for success. Together, we can achieve greatness and book our ticket to the United States.”
With the four-time AFCON champions seeking to secure back-to-back World Cup qualifications, Schafer’s message of unity and collective effort couldn’t be more timely.
The next FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, presents a tantalizing opportunity for Ghana to redeem themselves on the global stage.
