A death trap of a bridge that links Kotokuom and several other farming communities in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region has been closed down for repair works.
The bridge is currently inaccessible to many vehicles and risks collapsing at any given moment.
Years of neglect has led to portions of the concrete to fall apart. The irons rods have rusted whilst the bolts and nuts on most of the supporting metal have been removed; making using the bridge dangerous.
“Even walking on this bridge is scary because you don’t know when it will collapse. You feel it shaking when driving on it. It is important it is fixed so prevent any avoidable disaster”, a user of the bridge, Abdul Fathi complained.
Responding to the cry of residents, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza together with the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene directed the immediate closure of the bridge after inspecting its current state.
“Today, we are handing over the site to a contractor to start work. We are not going to Accra to think about it because of the dire state. We hope that by Friday, the contractor should mobilize and start work. The contractor should be able to execute this within the shortest possible time to bring relief to users”, Kwame Agbodza disclosed.
The announcement by the Minister has been lauded by residents of Kotokuom and beyond.
“This is good news to us however we want this to translate into action because the current state of the bridge is a disaster in waiting”, Mallam Ibrahim stated.
