Ghana’s newly appointed Technical Advisor, Winfried Schafer, has thrown down the gauntlet, declaring that the Black Stars can “punch their ticket” to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In his inaugural interview with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) since joining forces with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, Schafer exuded confidence ahead of Ghana’s impending 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
The matches, scheduled to take place during the March international window, will be crucial in determining Ghana’s fate in Group I.
Currently, Ghana occupies second spot in the group I after four matches, level on points (nine) with leaders Comoros.
Although the road ahead appears daunting, Schafer remains optimistic that the Black Stars can “rise to the challenge” and secure qualification.
“We have to go to the the next two matches is very, very confidence. The mentality, winner mentality. We go home, the players are very important. The players have to know when they come here and they go back, he is ready for his club. He is high motivated, he is fit. “
“Normally he think in his home, I have to go to Ghana, the feel is not good, the pitch is not good, the massage is not good. No. For us, that is what we have to do. We have to bring the players, they have to be happy when they come here and go back. So next time they win the next two matches. With that we can make a big big step for the States, Canada and Mexico” he added.
Ghana’s quest for back-to-back World Cup appearances comes on the heels of their disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
The Black Stars will be looking to “bounce back” and secure qualification, and Schafer’s arrival has injected a fresh wave of optimism into the team’s camp.
The tournament is slated to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will feature an expanded 48-nation lineup.
