Andre Ayew’s goal and assist for Le Havre against RC Lens on Saturday has got Ghanaians talking.
Ayew led Le Havre’s comeback at Lens after the visitors were 2-0 down before the half hour mark and ended up winning the seven-goal thriller 4-3.
He teed up Soumare for Le Havre’s first goal on 28 minutes before his looping header trickled inside Lens’ net five minutes later.
The goal took the forward’s league tally to four for the season, while his assist was his first this term.
Le Havre are sailing on choppy waters, with the club still in the drop zone despite their comeback win.
Irrespective of this, much attention has been centred on Andre Ayew’s performance, particularly with the Black Stars set for World Cup qualifying games in March.
Ghana take on Chad and Madagascar in March’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Given the setback of failing to make the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004, many Ghanaians have called for a complete overhaul of the playing body and technical team.
The reset began with the appointment of a new Black Stars Management Committee and the appointment of a technical advisor, as well as a Video analyst, psychologist and a new assistant coach.
However, it’s still yet to be seen what Otto Addo’s major tweak in his squad will be, with reports indicating Jordan Ayew and Djiku have been elevated to the role of main captain and assistant respectively.
These compounding factors of leadership crisis, an unrecognized goalscorer, and a lack of on-field direction has led to some Ghanaians calling for the reintegration of Andre -who is yet to feature for Ghana in almost 12 months – into the team.
The final verdict to recall Andre or not lies with Otto Addo, who is under immense pressure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup with the Black Stars.
