Renowned actress and former Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), Juliet Asante, has opened up about the difficulties, lack of support, and harassment she faced while leading the institution.
In an emotional social media post, Asante revealed that she was handed the position without an office, a team, or a vehicle to facilitate her work.
“With a paper in hand, but no office or money, I set out to recruit staff,” she recalled. According to her, in the first year, the NFA was only given 1,000 Ghana cedis ($100) for the entire year, and even when funding increased to 10,000 Ghana cedis ($1,000) in the second year, neither she nor her staff received salaries for two years.
Harassment and Online Attacks
Beyond financial constraints, Juliet Asante also endured verbal and sexual harassment during her tenure.
“I remember vividly a day when I was caught between two male bosses. One lifted me up bodily and shoved me into the arms of another, insisting that I give him a hug!” she disclosed.
She also recalled receiving relentless online and offline attacks, including one instance where she was insulted for two weeks straight across three different WhatsApp groups.
Despite her hardships, Asante took the time to congratulate Kafui Danku, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the NFA.
She called on the government to provide better support, office space, and a vehicle to ensure that Danku does not suffer the same fate.
“Please get Kafui an office and a car so she can work properly and not have to carry out Government work from her living room like I had to do,” she appealed.
Juliet Asante’s revelations call for an urgent need for structural and logistical improvements at the National Film Authority, as well as better protection for women in leadership positions.
