
Ghanaian defender Abdul Mumin has been dealt a significant blow ahead of the Black Stars’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers later this month.
The 26-year-old center-back suffered a setback during Rayo Vallecano’s 1-1 stalemate with Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday, March 1, and was subsequently substituted in the 35th minute, making way for Aridane Hernández.
Prior to his premature exit, Mumin was rock-solid at the back, pulling off a stunning goal-line clearance, intercepting a dangerous pass, blocking a potent shot, and boasting an impressive 81% pass completion rate, having successfully executed 17 of his 21 attempted passes.
The severity of Mumin’s injury remains unclear, casting a shadow of uncertainty over his availability for Ghana’s impending qualifiers.
The Black Stars are slated to host Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium, before embarking on a journey to Morocco to face Madagascar on March 24.
The latter fixture was relocated after CAF deemed Madagascar’s home stadium unfit for the qualifier.
Mumin’s injury is a bitter pill to swallow for Ghana, as the Rayo Vallecano defender has been a mainstay in La Liga, impressing with his defensive prowess for the second consecutive season.
Mumin has been an defensive stalwart for the Madrid-based outfit, netting crucial goals and earning individual accolades, including Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards.
This term, he has made 24 appearances, scoring twice and providing one assist, cementing his reputation as one of the division’s top defenders.
