Government intends to operationalize the Komenda Sugar Factory soon with the aim of providing about 7,500 jobs.
According to the Minister for Trade, Industry and Agribusiness, Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, who paid a visit to the factory to assess its current state and obtain firsthand information on matters that are hindering the progress of the factory, government has a special interest in ensuring that the factory resumes its sugar production from sugarcane grown locally.
“We’ll start planting sugarcane, crashing it and making sugar from here,” she announced on February 26.
The Minister also expressed disappointment in the current state of the factory.
“This is a huge factory that has been allowed to run down, unfortunately. And this is this nation’s asset, and we really want to bring it up to work,” Mrs Adjare assured.
According to her, the factory “will be one of the 24hour Economy factories” and pledged to liaise with other stakeholders to ensure that the factory becomes operational according to the “instructions of President Mahama”.
Central Regional Minister, Ekow Panyin, on his part promised to have the concerns of sugarcane farmers properly addressed as government plans to revitalize the factory. He said, “a special variety of high yielding sugarcane will be provided for farmers to grow.”
MP for the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Constituency, Samuel Atta Mills, assured that youth unemployment in the area will be addressed when the factory becomes operational.
“Almost all our youth are outside. It is either they are in Takoradi or Accra or even outside the country looking for jobs while we have this factory here that can provide at least 7,500 jobs. We built it and we are going to make sure that it works for the people of Komenda,” he observed.
