Convener of Democracy Hub and Social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has suggested that Ghana’s International Airport should be named after Nii Kwabena Bonne III.
Nii Kwabena Bonnie III was the Osu Alata Mantse (King) and Oyokohene of Techiman who led a two-day boycott of European goods in Gold Coast in 1948 over soaring high prices.
In December 1947, Chief Bonne wrote a letter to the Accra Chamber of Commerce outlining the grievances of the people. The letter proposed an ultimatum to European firms to lower prices or face a boycott.
The letter went unanswered, so on January 24, 1948, the boycott began. The slogan for the boycott was “We cannot buy; your prices are too high”.
In an interview on TV3’s New Day, Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Barker-Vormawor argued that Nii Kwabena Bonne’s bold act resulted in the country’s independence but many others like him have not been honoured because of the prominence of the Big Six.
He noted that it is prudent for indigenes like Kwabena Bonne to be honoured and not always recognizing only politicians.
“This is not part of the team, I believe that it is only fair that it is named after Nii Kwabena Bonne III who led the 1948 boycott against Association of West African Merchants (AWAM) that inherently gave birth to Independence because of the neck of the Big Six we have not been able to honour individuals like him.
“In fact, I have been to Kumasi and I have seen that most monuments are named after chief and royals there.
“I think it is important that Accra also looks at that and stop naming everything after politicians and give recognition to some of the indigenes of the land upon which we are fortunate to be on,” he stated.
Democracy Hub and CPP sue for removal of Kotoka’s name from Ghana’s International Airport
Although Democracy has filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking for the removal of Kotoka’s name from Ghana’s International Airport, Barker-Vormawor says this suggestion to name the airport after Kwabena Bonne is his personal wish.
