Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Esther Smith has responded to allegations from OFM Computer World and its CEO, Dr. Debrich Jeremiah Acheampong, regarding a debt of over $240,000, representing a 40% share of revenues from digital stores and control over her music rights and platforms.
OFM Computer World claimed that in 2020 under the leadership of Dr. Debrich Jeremiah Acheampong, the company established the YouTube channel EstherSmithMusic to promote Esther Smith’s gospel music career as part of a digital partnership.
OFM Computer World said a legally binding agreement was signed by Esther Smith on June 16, 2020, which recognized the company as the rightful creator and manager of the channel, as well as entrusting it with the technical and promotional management.
However, the company has alleged that Esther Smith without prior consultation or consent, unilaterally altered the channel’s password and recovery email, effectively excluding the original creators and managers.
Responding to these allegations in a statement posted via her X account, Esther Smith explained that she believes OFM Computer World and its affiliate, Debrich Consultancy, took actions that led to unauthorised control over her digital platforms, including her official website and YouTube channel.
She noted that upon her management’s investigation, they found out that OFM Computer World was allegedly using a fraudulent music platform called, MusicDiffusion.
According to the statement, this platform was “used to hijack all of Esther Smith’s songs, rerouting ownership rights and royalties away from her.”
“They redirected my official website and gained unauthorized control over my digital platforms, and now we’ve uncovered that they used MusicDiffusion to claim ownership over my songs. This is not just theft, it’s a complete hijack of my career,” the statement stated.
Esther Smith expressed concerns that her music distribution accounts and online presence were mismanaged and that she did not receive the full benefits from her music’s digital distribution.
Smith also shared that she uncovered discrepancies related to her song ownership and royalties, which led her to question the company’s practices in managing her digital assets.
She further explained that she felt payments for certain services were not properly justified and that she was misled about the promotional efforts made on her behalf.
Esther Smith’s management further alleged that “Once they gain access to an artist’s credentials, they maintain that control, making it difficult for the artist to reclaim their identity and digital presence.”
The gospel musician has since urged fellow musicians to be cautious when dealing with individuals or companies offering digital services.
“The digital age offers great opportunities for artistes to expand their reach, but it also presents new risk. Unfortunately, some people will use that knowledge gap to exploit musicians. I want to warn everyone to be vigilant, do your research, and always question the motive s of those offering to handle your brand online,” she added.
There is currently a legal tussle between Esther Smith and the company on the matter.
