The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr Adam Mutawakilu, has assured residents of Ho and customers in the catchment area of a lasting solution to the current water crisis in the area.
Residents of Ho, Kpeve, Have, Peki, Ziavi and several others have been without adequate water supply since the start of the year following the reoccurring breakdown of all three pumps at the Kpeve water intake leading to a total shutdown of the facility last week.
But the Managing Director, Mr Adam Mutawakilu who visited the facility with engineers, barely a week in office, revealed that the company has assessed the situation fully and has put in place urgent measures to restore water supply to the affected communities in the coming days.
“This water treatment plant started operating since 1993 with three pumps and the only time a new pump was supplied was 2015 but I would have thought that with this age, provision should have been made to replace the obsolete pumps but it was left,” he lamented.
“But when it happened, the engineers were here, they worked throughout the weekend to make sure that water is made available to the people but unfortunately, the pump we had is not a new one and the capacity is low but thankfully, I have instructed they bring two extra pumps to see how they can help pump the water to the heads so that at least, to get water for now,” he assured.
He further emphasized that President John Mahama is deeply concerned about the water crisis in Ho and remained committed to addressing the issue.
According to Mr Mutawakilu, the Government is determined to achieve the “Water For All Agenda” across the country, adding that the President is dedicated to initiating the Ho Water Expansion Project and other water projects in the region to meet growing demand.
The Kpeve Water Treatment Plant, with an installed capacity of 18,181 cubic liters per day, currently produces an average of 11,272 cubic liters daily — significantly below the required 23,580 cubic liters needed to meet the growing water demand of Ho, Kpeve, parts of the South Dayi District, and surrounding areas.
The water situation in Ho and surrounding areas has been a major concern for residents, affecting households, businesses, and institutions.
Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, reiterated the Government’s commitment to resolving the water crisis in the “foreseeable future,” stressing that the Ho Water Expansion Project will be a critical intervention.
As part of immediate measures, the Regional Minister further reiterated that the RCC would soon begin supplying water to essential service institutions, including schools and hospitals, using tankers to mitigate the crisis.
