President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Nana Oye Bampoe Addo as Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration), a significant appointment that brings a wealth of experience in human rights, social justice, and governance to the heart of the Ghanaian presidency.
Nana Oye Bampoe Addo is a renowned human rights lawyer with over three decades of experience in the field.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Masters in Law (LLM) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
Her career has been dedicated to advancing human rights and social justice at the international, regional, and national levels. As the Africa Regional Coordinator for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, she championed human rights causes across the continent. She also founded the Human Rights Advocacy Centre, a leading NGO dedicated to research and advocacy on human rights issues.
Throughout her career, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo has been instrumental in advocating for and securing the passage of critical legislation, including the Children’s Act, the Criminal Code Amendment Act, and the Domestic Violence Act. She has led numerous human rights missions, monitored human rights violations, and held governments accountable for their actions.
Her contributions have been recognized globally. She is the recipient of the Vera Chirwa Award for human rights in Africa and has been named one of the most influential African women.
Nana Oye Bampoe Addo’s experience in government is equally impressive. As the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection under the previous NDC administration, she spearheaded the development of key policies, including the Gender Policy, Social Protection Policy, and the Child and Family Welfare Policy. She also oversaw the restructuring of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) and successfully championed the closure of a traditional witch camp in the Northern Region of Ghana.
Beyond her ministerial role, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo has held several key positions within the NDC, including Secretary of the Conflict Resolution Committee, Secretary of the Manifesto Committee, and Chair of the Gender, Children and Social Protection Committee. She has also served as a member of the World Bank Advisory Council for Partnership for Economic Inclusion.
