Black Stars Team Manager defends team’s performance despite AFCON 2025 failure

Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON has sparked intense criticism, but Black Stars team manager Ameenu Shardow believes the team’s performances tell a different story than the disappointing results.

In the aftermath of Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Niger, which sealed their failure to qualify for the tournament, Shardow maintained that the team’s performances, especially in their opening 1-0 defeat against Angola, were better than the final outcomes suggest.

“It’s only the results which are yet to come, but if you look at the performances of the team in most of the games, we performed better than the results that we got,” Shardow stated on Happy FM.

“If we are going to be honest and factual to happenings, our first game against Angola, did anything suggest to you that we deserve to lose the game? When you pipe down the emotions and you go deeper into the details and analyze just the games, you’ll see that we performed well. If the performance of the team in all the games that we played is anything to go by, Ghana was supposed to top the group if we are only looking at the performance unless you want to be blind to the fact.”

Shardow’s comments come as coach Otto Addo has also faced heavy criticism following Ghana’s failure to secure a place in next year’s AFCON.

Addo expressed his own sadness over the outcome, admitting to feeling deeply affected by the disappointment of fans and his family.

Despite the challenges, Shardow remains optimistic that the team’s performances show potential for future success.

The Ghana FA Executive Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss the team’s performances during the qualifiers.
