Ghana coach Otto Addo has reacted to critics after his failure to guide the Black Stars to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Despite overseeing one of Ghana’s worst qualification campaigns, Addo did not apologise for the team’s poor performances but instead sought to justify the results.
Ghana secured just three points out of a possible 15, confirming their elimination ahead of their final match against Niger in Accra on Monday.
The Black Stars missed a crucial opportunity to remain in contention after surrendering a one-goal lead in a 1-1 draw with Angola last Friday, leaving the Palancas Negras unbeaten in the qualifiers.
Addressing the press ahead of the Niger game, Addo defended his credentials, stating “I trained under [Matthias] Sammer. I trained under [Jurgen] Klopp; I was assistant to Edin Terzic, who was Dortmund’s head coach.”
“They are also critical of some things, but this has much more value if I speak to Jurgen Klopp and he says this or that than somebody from anywhere saying blah blah, this is bad.
Admitting his record was poor, he added, “People can judge me by my results, which were not good.”
While calls for his resignation have intensified, Addo appears to retain the support of the top hierarchy despite failing to qualify Ghana for AFCON for the first time since 2004.
