The Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has received a second term.
As Nigeria’s former finance minister, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has a wealth of experience in international trade and finance.
She had previously expressed her willingness to serve a second four-year term on September 16, 2024. The WTO had begun preparations to fill its director-general position on October 8, 2024, allowing nominations until November 8, 2024.
However, no additional nominations were received by the deadline, solidifying her re-appointment.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s first term as Director-General began on March 1, 2021, making her the first woman and first African to hold the position.
Her achievements and leadership have earned her numerous recognition and awards, including being listed as one of the 50 Greatest World Leaders by Fortune in 2015 and one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME in 2014 and 2021.
