Olympic Games 100m women’s gold medalist Julien Alfred says obliterating the 100m record is not a part of her ambitions.
Alfred etched her name in Olympic history in the summer by becoming the first-ever Saint Lucian athlete to mount the podium. The sprinter chalked successes in her 100m and 200m sprint events, clinching gold and silver respectively.
Despite Alfred’s incredible achievements throughout 2024 – finishing as the World Indoor Champion and Olympic gold medalist – Alfred was unable to take down Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 100m record.
Griffith’s 100m Women’s world record was set when she blazed to the finish line in 10.49s in the US Olympic trials in 1988.
Alfred’s sensational 10.72s clocked in the final of the 100m of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games was miles off the world record.
“That’s not on my bingo, like it’s not on my list whatsoever,” she said to Olympics. com, before turning her attention to the future goals that do still motivate her. “Whatever time comes with winning an Olympic gold or world championships, then so be it,’ she added.
Alfred’s Olympic success was well received and acknowledged back home as September 27 has been named Julien Alfred’s Day – a holiday to reflect and celebrate the achievements of the sprinter.
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old is in the running for the Women’s Athlete of the Year accolade, alongside USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.
