John Dramani Mahama: A leader with vision, experience and integrity for Ghana’s future

It is an established fact that in the history of Ghanaian politics, very few figures resonate as strongly with the people as President John Dramani Mahama. A man of vision, integrity and determination, Mahama has left an indelible mark on Ghana, both as a seasoned leader and as a symbol of what true leadership should embody.

As he steps forward, ahead of the 2024 General elections, with renewed zeal and commitment, Ghanaians are once again inspired by his promise of a better future, underpinned by his remarkable knowledge, experience and understanding of the nation’s most pressing issues.

His honesty has built public trust, earning him the respect of Ghanaians across all walks of life, and a solid reputation across the world.

Mahama believes that leaders must face up to difficult situations with courage, and his record is a clear testament to his ability to implement challenging but necessary programmes to address the country’s needs. This is a man who navigated the country through the dumsor energy crisis by adopting pragmatic measures that stabilized the power sector.

Today, thanks to John Mahama’s investments, Ghana will no longer suffer the dire effects it suffered some time ago.  By investing in power infrastructure and diversifying Ghana’s energy sources, Mahama delivered long-term solutions that continue to benefit the nation. That is the man we are talking about.

Mahama’s decisive leadership extended beyond energy issues. He undertook the bold step of fuel price deregulation, a policy that stabilized the petroleum sector and improved transparency. This move, together with the introduction of the Energy Sector Levy (ESLA), though unpopular with NPP at the time, was a calculated and necessary step toward building an efficient, market-driven economy that supports growth and stability. It served Ghana so well to the extent that the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government were only too happy to collateralize ESLA.

John Mahama’s courage was further demonstrated when he took the audacious decision to bring the Ivory Coast maritime border dispute to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). This action safeguarded Ghana’s offshore oil fields, preserving a significant national asset for future generations. Yes, this is the man whose actions continue to serve Ghana well, long after he left office, than the acts of those who are presiding over Ghana today.

 

Building Economic Resilience for Ghana’s Future

Indeed, Mahama’s commitment to economic stability is evident in the financial buffers he established, such as the Stabilization Fund and Heritage Fund. These funds were created as part of a prudent policy to cushion the economy during downturns and to secure financial resources for future generations. True, visionary leaders look into the future and prepare for it –  and that is what Mahama represents.

These economic safeguards, alongside his administration’s track record of receiving the highest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, played a crucial role in solidifying Ghana’s position as a preferred destination for business investment. Statistics from his tenure reveal a remarkable surge in infrastructure development and FDI inflows, marking one of the most prosperous periods for the nation in recent memory. That is why despite Mahama’s good work in bringing in businesses and boosting employment, it hurts so much that Akufo-Addo/Bawumia have turned everything upside down and businesses are either closing today or relocating to other neighbouring countries like Togo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and others which are deemed to be more business favourable than Ghana under this NPP government.

Yet, between 2012 and 2016 alone, FDI grew to nearly $4 billion, as Ghana became a hub of opportunity for both African and international businesses. This boom was not just about numbers; it translated into significant infrastructure development that reshaped the nation’s economic landscape. In just four years, Mahama’s administration completed more infrastructure projects than any administration in Ghana’s history, save, perhaps the Osagyefo – building roads, hospitals, schools and energy projects that improved quality of life and enhanced economic prospects nationwide.

 

Strengthening the Institutions that Uphold Ghana’s Democracy

President Mahama believes in the power of strong institutions to uphold democracy and justice. During his tenure, he made it a priority to empower state institutions, ensuring they could operate independently and transparently. Institutions such as the Electoral Commission and the judiciary were equipped with the autonomy to function without undue influence, thereby strengthening public trust in governance. Today, this legacy of institutional independence stands in sharp contrast to concerns about the erosion of state institutions’ credibility. Mahama’s track record has shown Ghanaians the importance of nurturing these institutions to build a fairer, more accountable society.

 

Championing Women’s Empowerment

Recognizing the critical role of women in nation-building, President Mahama has consistently advocated for their empowerment and representation. His choice of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as a vice-presidential candidate marked a historic moment in Ghana’s political journey. With her distinguished academic and public service background, Professor Opoku-Agyemang is not only a role model for young girls but also an undeniable proof to Mahama’s commitment to a government that reflects the diverse make-up of Ghana. By empowering women, Mahama sees a future where Ghana’s economy and communities are strengthened by the contributions of half the nation’s population – women who lead, innovate and are a core aspect of the building of this great nation.

 

The 2024 Vision: A Roadmap to Transformative Change

Looking ahead, President Mahama’s vision for Ghana’s future is both practical and inspiring. The 2024 Resetting Ghana Manifesto outlines policies aimed at addressing the nation’s pressing challenges and unlocking its vast potential. One key component is the proposed 24-Hour Economy, designed to boost economic activity by supporting businesses to operate continuously in key economic hubs. This will not only create jobs but also make Ghana a true contender in the global economy.

Mahama’s ambitious Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA) focuses on building a modern agricultural sector powered by technology and innovation. Through projects like the Transformational Grains Development Project, the manifesto envisions Ghana as a breadbasket for the region, increasing the production of staple crops like maize, rice and soybeans. Additionally, the Vegetable Development Project aims to expand the farming of tomatoes, onions, and peppers, enhancing food security and creating a sustainable source of income for farmers.

Furthermore, not stopping at only the 24-hour economy, Mahama’s Youth Employment and Empowerment Agenda addresses Ghana’s critical youth unemployment issue. By creating job opportunities in emerging fields such as agribusiness, digital technology, and renewable energy, his administration will harness the talents of Ghana’s young people to drive the nation forward.
