In response to escalating security concerns surrounding the ongoing conflict in Bawku and its neighboring areas, the Chief Justice has ordered the immediate closure of several courts across the Upper East Region.
This directive, issued on October 29, 2024, aims to safeguard judges, court staff, lawyers, and members of the public who use these facilities.
According to a memorandum from the Judicial Secretary dated October 29, “the closures affect key judicial facilities, including the High Court and Circuit Court in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.”
The decision follows rising concerns voiced by legal practitioners and other stakeholders regarding the safety of judicial staff and court users amid the ongoing tensions in Bawku.
The directive calls for Court Registrars to secure all court assets and ensure they are properly safeguarded during the shutdown.
Additionally, all staff members are advised to remain cautious and prioritize their safety during this period.
“Please accept the compliments of the Honourable Lady Chief Justice,” concluded Justice Cyra Pamela C. A. Koranteng, who signed the memorandum.
The closure of these courts is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
It underscores the judicial administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its personnel and the general public amid ongoing regional conflicts.
The Bawku conflict, which has seen intermittent escalations in recent years, continues to pose significant safety challenges for residents and institutions in the region.
The judiciary’s latest action reflects an ongoing effort to mitigate risks while awaiting more stable conditions that would allow courts to safely resume operations.
