A communications team member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku, has commended the Ghana Police Service for the treatment given to participants of the Democracy Hub demonstration.
She says although people have raised concerns with the arrest and detainment of the protestors, she sees nothing wrong with it.
Speaking on BigIssue on TV3’s NewDay Thursday, September 26, 2024, Madam Daaku said there have been instances under the erstwhile Mahama administration where demonstrators were beaten by the police.
Citing the ‘Let my vote count’ protest in September 2015, she said people were beaten to the extent of one losing his eye, a situation the National Democratic Congress (NDC) described as a falsity at the time.
According to her, the police must be commended for being lenient with the Democracy Hub protestors, juxtaposing the action of the servicemen at the time with what is happening now.
“We have to check Ghana Police Service and their reaction to protestors. This particular protest, the Ghana Police Service in my estimation did very well. We’ve had protests in this country, at least I remember the ‘Let My Vote Count’ protest. I was part but I wasn’t in the forefront. At the end of the day, we saw the people who were beaten and it was under the presidency of John Mahama.
“So, if you are going to be blaming political parties and Presidents for things that have happened during protests, we should start with former President Mahama, and how he allowed people to be beaten to the extent that one person lost his eye, and when that happened and we said the police had hurt the person, the person has lost his eye and is at the hospital, we got party apparatchiks who told us it was ketchup.
“We had NDC people sitting in the media telling us the people are exaggerating. We had people who were beaten with horsewhips under the presidency of his Excellency former President John Mahama. So if we want to talk about how protestors are treated, I think we should remove the Presidents out because I don’t think President Mahama asked the police at that time to go and beat the protestors,” she explained.
