Lawyer for Democracy Hub protesters, Timothy Selikem Donkor has stated that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has acknowledged receipt of their petition for investigation of the police over the arrest and detention of protesters
The lawyers petitioned CHARJ on Wednesday, September 25 for investigation into what they have described as the “unlawful arrest” and “unlawful detention” of the Democracy Hub protesters by the police.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Thursday, September 26, Timothy Donkor disclosed that CHRAJ has assured them of investigations into the matter although the Commission is yet to provide an official written response.
“We’ve not received response in respect of act but they have acknowledged receipt of the petition and they informed us they will immediately take steps to ensure that a case management committee is set up and the matter is investigated. So, we are waiting for that,” he noted.
CHRAJ petitioned to investigate police over ‘Say No To Galamsey’ protest
Protesters of the ‘Say No To Galamsey’ protest were arrested by the police on September 21 and 22 during the three-day protest against galamsey.
The police have described the protest as an “unlawful assembly” and charged the protest for various offences including; destruction of property, offensive conduct, assault on public officer and unlawful assembly.
Twenty-eight protesters have so far been remanded into police custody after they were denied bail on Tuesday, September 24.
Eleven (11) others whose cases were heard in another circuit court were also denied bail but were remanded into prison custody after their lawyer prayed for an adjournment to study their charges.
They have been scheduled to reappear in court on October 8.
