AC Milan secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over fierce rivals Inter Milan in the Derby della Madonnina, thanks to a late header from centre-back Matteo Gabbia.
The match, held at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, saw Gabbia rise highest to meet a Tijjani Reijnders free-kick in the 89th minute, breaking a run of six straight derby defeats for Milan.
Christian Pulisic opened the scoring early on for AC Milan, as the American winger slotted past Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer to give the Rossoneri the lead.
Inter responded before the half-hour mark through Federico Dimarco, who made history by becoming the first Milan-born player to score a Serie A goal in the derby since Paolo Maldini in 1994.
Both sides pushed for the decisive goal in a fiercely contested second half. Milan appeared to have been awarded a penalty in the 65th minute for a handball by Inter captain Lautaro Martinez, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review showed the ball had hit his shoulder.
As the game neared its conclusion, Milan’s Tammy Abraham had a golden opportunity to secure the win, but the striker fired wide with just Sommer to beat after a perfectly threaded through ball from Reijnders.
Just when it seemed both teams would settle for a draw, Matteo Gabbia stepped up with a powerful header in the dying moments, sending AC Milan fans into celebration.
Inter brilliant home run ends
The loss marks Inter’s first home defeat in Serie A in over a year and prevented them from climbing to the top of the table.
Milan, who have been under pressure in recent weeks, are now level with their city rivals on eight points from five matches, easing the burden on manager Paulo Fonseca.
The Rossoneri will take confidence from this result as they seek to build momentum, while Inter will need to regroup after a rare home loss.
