Hearts of Oak fans finally had reason to celebrate as their team secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Bechem United on Sunday night in their Ghana Premier League match at the Legon Stadium.
After two consecutive losses to open the 2024/25 season, the Phobians were under immense pressure to turn their fortunes around.
With the Accra Sports Stadium temporarily closed by the National Sports Authority, Hearts of Oak were forced to host their home game at the University of Ghana Stadium, adding to the challenges they faced.
The breakthrough came just after halftime when new signing Ransford Mensah opened the scoring for Hearts with a sublime free-kick from the edge of the box in the 53rd minute. His powerful shot gave Bechem’s goalkeeper no chance, lifting the spirits of the home side as they celebrated their first goal of the season.

The Phobians took full control of the second half, creating several scoring opportunities. Their persistence paid off again in the 75th minute when Hamza Issah, last season’s top scorer for Hearts of Oak, doubled the lead with a well-placed finish. Issah’s goal capped off a dominant display and ensured Hearts took all three points.
Hearts of Oak find relief
The win was a welcome relief for Hearts of Oak manager Aboubakar Ouattara, who had faced growing pressure after the team’s slow start.
Hearts will aim to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Nations FC in the Ashanti Region in their next fixture.
Meanwhile, Bechem United remain winless after three games and are yet to find the back of the net this season, adding to their struggles. They will need a significant turnaround as they look ahead to their next match.
This victory lifts Hearts of Oak out of the relegation zone, and the Phobians will be eager to continue their resurgence in the coming weeks.
