A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has said that the call for an audit of the Voter register should be premised on evidence.
He recounted that when the NPP was in opposition, the pro-NPP pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) gathered evidence of a bloated voter register and went to the Supreme Court after protesting on the streets.
The apex court, based on the evidence made available by the lawyer of the LMVCA, Nana Bediatuo Asante, ordered for the Electoral Commission to clean the register, he said.
In a post on his X platform, he said “The campaign to have the voter register audited did not stop with the LMVCA protest of Sept 2015. In Feb of election year 2016, Nana Bediatuo filed a writ with concrete evidence and the Supreme Court ruled for the audit. So, it’s about evidence and timing.”
His comments come at a time when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, September 17 organized the ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration to press home their demand for the audit of the voter register.
“Our demand is simple,” National Chairman of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia said.
He added “We want the EC to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election and a credible register is central to that goal.
“We want nothing but transparent elections that will guarantee our right to choose our leaders. Without the right of self-determination, democracy is good as gone and every democracy at one point in time, comes under threat Ghana’s democracy is under serious threat now and we want to prevail.
“We shall overcome because every democracy has the risk of producing a tyrant but our ability to fight that tyrant and restore democracy once again is paramount and we shall prevail.”
