The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has signed a landmark cooperation agreement with the German Development Agency (GIZ) to launch the “Make Fashion Inclusive” programme, a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower People with Disabilities (PWDs) by offering skills training and economic opportunities in the fashion industry.
YEA’s CEO, Mr. Kofi Baah Agyepong, highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts to support PWDs, which include the establishment of disability desks in all 266 YEA offices across Ghana and the recruitment of 282 PWDs as district disability officers.
The “Make Fashion Inclusive” programme marks a further step in this mission, offering targeted training to 50 beneficiaries who will gain essential fashion industry skills and receive support with a guaranteed market for their products. In addition, the programme will provide participants with a shop to help facilitate the sale of their goods, ensuring their economic empowerment.
Supporting Fashion Entrepreneurs
In addition to aiding PWDs, the initiative will extend support to existing fashion entrepreneurs and start-ups. Participants will benefit from training in business development, financial literacy, and skills enhancement, equipping them to compete in the growing fashion sector. This comprehensive approach ensures that both new and existing businesses will have the tools they need to thrive.
A Commitment to Inclusivity and Sustainable Growth
Mr. Kofi Baah Agyepong described the programme as “a new dawn” for the agency’s commitment to creating decent jobs, especially for the youth and marginalized groups such as PWDs. By promoting inclusivity and economic development, the program is poised to make a significant impact not only in the lives of PWDs but also in the broader Ghanaian economy.
As part of the programme, participants will receive modern electric sewing machines and access to a Skills and Fashion Hub. This hub will serve as a center for innovation and collaboration, driving growth in the fashion industry and supporting the professional development of PWDs.
A Groundbreaking Collaboration
Wilhelm Hugo, Head of Programme for the German Development Corporation’s Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition,” expressed excitement over the collaboration with YEA and other local stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of inclusive economic development, stating, “We want to create jobs for all persons, for all citizens,” and highlighted the innovative nature of the “Make Fashion Inclusive” project.
The two-year project will initially begin with a pilot training programme, with plans to expand its reach to other sectors and participants over time. Hugo noted the transformative potential of this initiative, which aims to empower marginalized communities and foster sustainable economic growth.
A New Chapter for Youth Employment in Ghana
The partnership between YEA and GIZ reflects a shared commitment to youth employment and empowerment, with a focus on inclusivity for all. By launching the “Make Fashion Inclusive” program, YEA continues to solidify its leadership in creating decent jobs and promoting sustainable development.
This programme not only provides PWDs with essential tools and resources but also contributes to the growth of Ghana’s fashion industry, creating a model for other sectors to follow.
With the support of international partners like GIZ, YEA is well-positioned to create lasting, inclusive economic opportunities for the youth and marginalized communities across Ghana.
