As the Electoral Commission (EC) wrapped up the filing process for the 2024 presidential elections, two candidates find themselves in limbo.
Independent candidate Dr. Nii Amu Darko and Progressive People’s Party (PPP) submitted their nominations after the official deadline, leaving their presidential bids in the hands of the EC.
The duo’s late submission on the final day, September 13, came after the EC had announced the closure of the filing process. As a result, the Commission is now tasked with deciding whether to accept or reject their documents, adding a layer of suspense to an already eventful election season.
Although their documents were received, the Commission will make a decision on what happens next.
Deputy Commissioner of the EC in charge of Operations, Mr Samuel Tettey said, “these nominations are being submitted after 5:00pm and we are not expected to receive nominations after 5:00pm.” He told Independent Candidate Dr Nii Amu Darko.
He added, “we are not going to accept it, we receive it, but we are not going to accept it.”
Will the EC Make an Exception?
While the EC has strict guidelines regarding the filing deadlines, both Dr. Nii Amu Darko and the Progressive People’s Party will be hoping the Commission will consider their candidacies despite the late submissions.
For both candidates, the stakes are high. Dr. Nii Amu Darko, a medical doctor and reform advocate, has long championed governance reforms and greater independence from the traditional party structures.
His platform could offer a fresh alternative for voters seeking change outside the established political systems. Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, on the other hand, represents a party with a track record of participation in Ghana’s elections, and his exclusion could affect the PPP’s ability to remain a key player in the political landscape.
As the election approaches, the fate of Dr. Nii Amu Darko and Kofi Asamoah-Siaw hangs in the balance. With the clock ticking, all eyes are now on the EC as they prepare to make a critical decision that could reshape the candidate lineup for the 2024 presidential race.
