The Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area, Naa Prof. Edmund Mwinyem Delle Chiir VIII has said the five-member inter-ministerial committee set up by government to engage stakeholders on illegal mining would yield no result.
The former chairman of the Convention People’s Party noted that the members of the committee are “partisan” and will therefore not proffer any good recommendation.
Speaking exclusively to TV3 on Friday, September 13 after the committee was announced, he expressed no faith and trust in the committee to do a good job.
Prof. Edmund Mwinyem Delle Chiir VIII believes that the committee should have consisted of non-partisan members to ensure integrity in its work.
“Well, he is the president and everything rests on him. If they are even to do their work, where are the stakeholders? It shouldn’t be only one group of people coming from the same party.
“I would have thought that knowing that this is now a national concern, not NPP or NDC, we should have certain people who have clear minds without fear or favour but you see if you take your own people to go, no matter what efforts you make, the others will protest.
“I would have expected that we have a non-partisan group so that at least these NPP people, you put them together but once you put your own people whatever you do, you would have opposition,” he said.
Akufo-Addo forms adhoc ministerial committee to engage stakeholders on galamsey
On Friday, September 13, the Ministry of Information announced a five-member inter-ministerial committee set up under the instructions of President Akufo-Addo to engage stakeholders on galamsey activities in the country.
The committee which is chaired by the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah has other members to be; Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, Minister for Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar.
The issue of galamsey has resurface in the past few days with many individuals urging government to put an end to the menace. Labour unions and Civil Society organisations have criticized government for its lip service on fighting the menace.
Organised Labour has threatened a nationwide strike by September 30 if government does not take drastic measures to put an end to galamsey. President Akufo-Addo has also been asked to declare a state of emergency in areas where galamsey is actively been involved.
