Ghanaian football fans have expressed frustration following the Black Stars’ 1-1 draw against Niger on their second match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco.
Despite taking the lead before halftime through Alidu Seidu, Ghana failed to hold onto the win, and Niger’s Oumar Sako equalised just 10 minutes from full time.
This unexpected result has left many Ghanaians disappointed, with some criticising the team’s lack of intensity and focus throughout the game.
Many also remain concerned about the lack of concentration the Black Stars have shown in the final minutes of crucial matches on several instances, and believe the team allows their opponents too many opportunities to exploit, ultimately leading to a lack of consistent results.
Others attributed the draw to a lack of desire from the players but expressed hope that coach Otto Addo could turn things around in the coming matches.
Despite the underwhelming start to the qualifiers, some supporters however remain optimistic that Ghana can regain confidence ahead of the AFCON tournament in Morocco, and book their 11th straight appearance after missing out on the competition in 2004.
The Black Stars currently sit in third place in Group F with just one point from two matches, following a surprise defeat in Kumasi and the draw with Niger.
With five points dropped, the team now faces a challenging path to qualification. Ghana must try to win their four remaining matches, including two critical fixtures against Sudan and a rematch with Angola, who recently ended the Black Stars’ 24-year unbeaten streak at home in Kumasi.
Coach Otto Addo will be looking for his team to improve in the upcoming fixtures, but for many fans, this international break will be one to forget.
1. Put Kudus on the flanks where all the European coaches find him useful.
2. Alidu cannot continue to be our left back
3. Partey is only useful as a DM and nothing else
4. We are missing a creative midfielder
5. Use natural wingers who can run at the defense #BlackStars
