Cristiano Ronaldo came off the bench to deliver a late winner for Portugal, breaking Scotland’s hearts in a dramatic Nations League encounter.
The 2-1 victory extended Scotland’s dismal run of form, marking their eighth consecutive competitive game without a win.
Scotland shocked the home crowd early on when Scott McTominay headed in the opener in the seventh minute.
Despite being on the back foot for much of the first half, Steve Clarke’s men repelled Portugal’s 16 shots before the break with a solid defensive performance.
However, an individual error from goalkeeper Angus Gunn allowed Bruno Fernandes’ long-range shot to slip through his hands and into the net, levelling the score after half-time.
Introduced at the break, Ronaldo immediately made his presence felt, twice hitting the post before finally finding the back of the net. His 901st career goal came in the 86th minute, bundling home a superb Nuno Mendes cross.
Scotland had their chances, with penalty appeals from Billy Gilmour and Ryan Christie denied, while McTominay forced a save from Diogo Costa. But Portugal’s relentless pressure eventually paid off, with Ronaldo’s strike sealing the win.
The result compounded Scotland’s woes.
Ronaldo’s winner also marked his second consecutive game scoring for Portugal, having netted against Croatia in their previous outing.
The victory keeps Portugal on course in the Nations League, while Scotland continues to search for answers amid their poor run of form.
