The highly anticipated 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season kicked off with unexpected results, headlined by Basake Holy Stars’ stunning 1-0 win over former champions Hearts of Oak.
Playing at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, league newcomers Basake Holy Stars silenced the Phobians just two minutes into the game, thanks to a quick strike from Prince Tweneboah. Despite relentless efforts from Hearts of Oak, they were unable to break through, leaving the fans in shock.
In other matches, Hearts of Oak’s bitter rivals, Asante Kotoko, started their campaign on a high note with a 1-0 away win against Karela United. Albert Amoah’s 36th-minute goal ended the Porcupine Warriors’ winless streak against Karela, marking their first victory against the side since 2021.
Meanwhile, Heart of Lions secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Aduana Stars at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park. Mustapha Yakubu gave Lions the lead in the 81st minute, but Aduana Stars responded with a last-minute equaliser from Emmanuel Marfo during stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Bibiani Gold Stars clinched a 2-1 victory over Legon Cities at the Duns Park, while Nsoatreman FC handed newcomers Young Apostles a rude welcome to the top flight, defeating them 2-0.
The evening match between Medeama and Accra Lions is set to close the matchday, but there was another eventful goalless draw earlier at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, where both teams finished with ten men after receiving red cards.
This thrilling opening weekend sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.
