Hearts of Oak kick off their 2024-25 Ghana Premier League campaign today, September 8, as they welcome debutants Holy Stars to the Accra Sports Stadium, marking the start of their quest for league glory.
Following a nail-biting escape from relegation last season, where they finished 14th, Hearts of Oak are now revitalised and poised for a triumphant comeback in the 2024-25 league. With a renewed sense of purpose, they’re determined to turn the page and author a remarkable success story, making a bold statement and leaving a lasting impression.
Hearts of Oak made savvy moves in the transfer market, bolstering their squad with quality additions despite the departure of key players like Glid Otanga, Kofi Agbesimah, Salifu Ibrahim, and Kwadwo Obeng Jnr. Notably, they secured the services of Benjamin Asare, the reigning golden glove winner with 16 clean sheets for Great Olympics, as well as prolific goal-scorer Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, who netted 13 goals for Nations FC, and Samuel Amofa, further strengthening their lineup.
Over the past four years, Hearts of Oak have maintained a perfect record against Premier League newcomers, with an unblemished streak of no losses. In their last seven encounters, they have secured six victories and one draw, boasting an impressive tally of 12 goals scored and just three conceded.
Hearts of Oak defender Kelvin Osei Asibey has made a bold prediction, stating that the team is poised for a remarkable campaign in the 2024-25 league, promising that the Phobians will achieve something extraordinary this season.
“The availability of some old players and the addition of new players has strengthened our squad depth. The coaches and the physical trainers helped us a lot during the pre-season. The large squad we have now will increase healthy competition in the team as we have enough numbers in each position. So this time around, we will be in touch with the coaches. We will show them that we are coming all out to do something special.
Hearts of Oak are looking to break a frustrating trend that has seen them go without a win and a goal on Matchday One of the GPL since the 2020-21 season – a dismal start they’ll be eager to rectify.
Hearts of Oak face a crucial test today as they seek to break their Match Day One curse that has plagued them since 2021, while also aiming to extend their winning streak against league newcomers – a victory would be a promising start to the season.
