Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated his unflinching desire to reform the public transport sector by replacing diesel and petrol dependent vehicles with electric vehicles.
Addressing party supporters as part of the resumption of his Greater Accra Regional campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia said the reform has become necessary to reduce cost of transportation in the country.
The Vice President entered the Okaikoi South Constituency on Wednesday September 4, 2024 accompanied by government officials and members of his campaign team.
Dr Bawumia fraternized with traders at the Kaneshie market and appealed for their votes after sharing aspects of his manifesto promises with them.
He later addressed a rally of party supporters at the Kaneshie market where he outlined details of his manifesto.
He said an administration he seeks to lead in 2025, will scrap import duties on mobile phones.
He said, “if you are a mobile phone seller, listen to me. If I become president, there will be no more import duties on mobile phones.”
He believes this will make the phones affordable and accessible for all. The delegation later engaged the electorates in town hall meeting.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said he is committed to revamp the public transport system to make transportation cost cheaper for all.
He said two factors account for high transport cost in the country: fuel and spare parts. “electric vehicles use no fuel and spare parts are minimal that is we will import them into the country.
He said one hundred of such vehicles have been ordered and they will be in the country before December for piloting in Accra.
On education, the NPP flagbearer said government has completed the distribution of laptops to all teachers in the country touting that no government in Africa has been able to do that.
In the Okaikoi Central Constituency, the campaign team was received by MP of the area, Patrick Yaw Boamah, chiefs and religious leaders at a durbar.
Dr Bawumia again announced the introduction of ‘Buy Ghana First’ policy backed by legislation to compel the citizens to minimize importation of foreign goods that can be found in Ghana.
