Germany eased their way to a 3-1 victory against a helpless Nigeria on Wednesday night in Bogotá at the ongoing U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria went into the game, buoyed by Flourish Sabastine’s late strike against North Korea to pick up maximum points in their last outing.
However, Germany’s Alara Sehitler’s precise finish took the wind out of the sails of the Falconets, giving the Germans the lead after 17 minutes.
Nigeria struggled to find a way back into the game and went into the interval trailing the 2014 champions.
It was all Nigeria after the break, and tnhey were rewarded for their relentless pressure as Chiamaka Okwuchukwu pulled them level in the 50th minute.
The Germans responded well as a crisp team move was finished off by Sofie Zdebel after the hour mark.
It was one-way traffic from there, with Germany placing their foot firmly on the pedal – although Nigeria spurned some opportunities.
Second half substitute Sarah Ernst put the result beyond doubt with a late stoppage time goal to send Germany to the summit of group D and leave Nigeria in second place.
Elsewhere in Cali, Morocco lost 2-0 to the United States to go bottom of group C and face the possibility of exiting the tournament after successive defeats.
Wins have been difficult to come by for African sides in the second round of games, with Nigeria and Morocco’s defeats adding up to Cameroon’s 1-0 loss against Colombia.
The onus is on Ghana to change the narrative when they take on Japan later tonight in Bogotá.
