The Ghana Hydrological Authority has said that an amount of $5 billion is needed to effectively combat the country’s ongoing flood issues.
Dr. John Kissi, the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, presented this critical need to the Assurances Committee in Parliament on August 28.
Dr. Kissi outlined that the current funding level falls short of what is needed. “In 2023, we were allocated GHC92 million under the National Flood Control Programme. However, based on our assessment, we estimate that we need about $5 billion to comprehensively address the flood waste challenges we face,” he explained.
Chairman of the committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reacting to the revelation said their budget allocation was “a drop in the ocean”
The proposed funding is intended for a wide-ranging flood risk management strategy across all regions of Ghana. Dr. Kissi stressed that without this significant financial investment, many areas will continue to suffer from devastating floods.“
The need for such a large-scale investment underscores the severity of the flooding problem, which has been causing property damage and loss of life across the nation.
The Authority’s call for increased funding highlights the necessity for an expanded and effective approach to flood management.
