Political parties have been given copies of Provisional Voters’ Register – EC

The Electoral Commission says all is set for the voter exhibition exercise tomorrow.

Earlier, pressure group, Election Watch Ghana picketed the Commission to demand the release of the provisional voters register but were denied access.

The group made up of members of the smaller political parties stormed the Electoral Commission’s head office on Monday to demand the voters register.

The picketing, which lasted barely 2 hours, was a result of the Electoral Commission’s failure to make the voters register available to political parties on Friday August 15, 2024 as promised, prompting the group to question the Commission’s preparedness for the intended exercise.

Convener of the pressure group, Mark Ewusi accused the Electoral Commission of registering people onto the voter roll at the blind side of the political parties. He claimed that is why the EC has delayed in releasing the register.

He said, “we need to get the provisional register because that is what we are going to use and we need to scrutinize it as well.

He further asserted that, “We have alleged that there are people who do not qualify, and they are all in the register, so the only opportunity for us to take them out is through the exhibition.”

“If you don’t have the register, how do you challenge?” he questioned.

In a rebuttal, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services at the Electoral Commission, Bossman Asare described the pressure group as not credible.

He gave the surest indication that the election management body is set to go ahead with the exhibition exercise on Tuesday August 20, 2024 at all Polling Stations in the country after successfully registering 92,350 qualified voters in the mop-up exercise.

According to Bossman Asare, hard drives containing data of the provisional register are now ready and that the NDC has already taken delivery of theirs as at Monday morning. He explained that the delay by the Commission is still within the legal framework.

Bossman Asare indicated that “In the CI, the law allows the Commission to make the register available not later than three months after the compilation. So, the Commission is well within the law, but we have tried to be sure that the parties get it in advance.”

“The registers are ready. One of the main parties has collected the register, others are also around to take it,” he said.

The exhibition of the provisional register is to afford the Commission, the opportunity to remove names of deceased individuals and persons with multiple registration from register and compile a more credible voter album for the December 7 polls.
