The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasised his commitment to grassroots sports development in Ghana.
During a policy address earlier this year, Dr. Bawumia introduced the concept of the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, which he envisions as a cornerstone for promoting sports and education at the school level.
This initiative has now been officially incorporated into the NPP’s Manifesto. Dr Bawumia outlined that, if elected, his government will establish the Ghana School Sports Secretariat as an agency under the Ministry of Sports, working in collaboration with stakeholders like the Ghana Education Service (GES) and various sports federations.
Recognising the ongoing challenges in funding school sports, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the Secretariat will ensure sustainable development through annual budget allocations. Additionally, he expressed plans to partner with international sports organizations to position Ghana as a hub for emerging sports in Africa.
“My government will also seek school-level collaboration with international sports bodies like the NBA and NFL to make Ghana a hub for these emerging sports in Africa, to create more opportunities for young people,” Dr Bawumia stated.
The 2024 general elections are set for December 7, with Vice President Bawumia and former President John Mahama, representing the opposition NDC, as the leading candidates.
