Letsile Tebogo, Botswana’s golden boy, received a hero’s welcome upon his return home after clinching the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the 200m at the Paris 2024 Games.
The 21-year-old sprinter stunned the world by defeating pre-race favorite Noah Lyles to claim gold in the 200m with a remarkable time of 19.46 seconds, setting a new lifetime best and African record.
Tebogo’s victory marked the first time Botswana and Africa had won an Olympic gold medal in any sprint event, solidifying his status as one of the continent’s greatest sprinters.

Tebogo also excelled in the men’s 4x400m final, anchoring Botswana to a silver medal with a split time of 43.03 seconds, the second-fastest in history behind Michael Johnson.
The U.S. team, led by Rai Benjamin, won gold with an Olympic record time of 2:54.43, while Botswana set a new African record with 2:54.53. Great Britain took bronze with a European record of 2:55.83.
In recognition of Tebogo’s achievements, Botswana’s President, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, declared a public holiday to celebrate the national hero. Streets were filled with fans in blue, black, and white, showing their pride for their Olympic champion.
