The construction of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour has been completed and is now awaiting commissioning.
During a recent tour of the facility, the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, expressed his satisfaction with the work done, highlighting the project’s significance for the local community.
The $50 million project, funded by the Chinese government, took four years to complete. It involved dredging the harbour basin, constructing hydraulic structures, and building various management facilities.
The engineering company responsible for the construction is CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Limited, from China.
In a media interview following his tour, Minister Ofori Asiamah emphasized the importance of equipping local residents with the necessary skills to maintain the harbour once the contractors hand it over.
He also noted that while the construction is complete, some paperwork and final inspections are still pending before the facility can be officially commissioned.
“The construction of the harbour is completed. We need to finalize some paperwork for the transfer to the government. Once the final certificate is signed, I’ll consult with His Excellency to schedule the commissioning based on his availability,” the minister stated.
However, not all reactions to the new facility have been positive. Some local fishermen have expressed concerns that the harbour does not favor their operations. According to the fishermen’s spokesperson, about fifty boats have already been destroyed due to strong sea waves, and they are calling for additional sea breakers to control the situation.
“More sea breakers are needed to manage the waves,” said the spokesperson.
Other fishermen also voiced concerns about the absence of adequate shelter at the harbour, where they can take refuge during harsh weather conditions.
Despite these concerns, the Minister assured the fishermen that their feedback would be taken into account, and necessary adjustments would be made to ensure the harbour serves its intended purpose effectively.
