Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez for a record £81.5 million.
The Argentine forward has penned a six-year deal with the Spanish club, extending his stay until 2030.
Alvarez, who won six major trophies during his two-year tenure at Manchester City, expressed his gratitude for his time at the club.
“Today I say goodbye to this amazing club, with a lot of emotion,” he said. “These have been two very special years. During this time, I have grown and learnt a lot – both as a player and as a person.”
Atletico Madrid’s statement described Alvarez as a “versatile, fast, skilful forward with great ability to link up with his teammates,” also noting his capacity to play as an attacking midfielder.
The deal comprises an initial £64.4 million fee, with a potential additional £17.1 million in add-ons. This transfer surpasses Manchester City’s previous record sale of Raheem Sterling to Chelsea in 2022 for £50 million. City had originally acquired Alvarez from River Plate for £14.1 million in January 2022.
Atletico Madrid are also close to finalising the acquisition of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea as they aim to challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona for the La Liga title.
On the transfer front, talks with Chelsea regarding Samu Omorodion have reportedly collapsed due to issues with personal terms. There is also speculation about Joao Felix potentially moving to Chelsea.
