Professor Lord Mensah, an Economist and Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School has offered expert insights into Accra’s night economy, which he says has come to stay, and its potential is immense on the economic future of Ghana.
“With the right investments in infrastructure and security, beginning with a sector-by-sector approach, the 24-hour economy policy could become a sustainable reality”.
He further stated, “the conversation of the 24-hour policy is very rife, as it behooves government to create economic environment for it thrive”.
In recent years, Accra has witnessed a remarkable rise in night-time businesses, driven by extended hours designed to boost sales and meet the growing demand for services after dark.
From local food joints, street hawking to the transport system, the city’s night economy is thriving.
Abeka-Lapaz enclave is considered one of the places that pulses with night life, the air is always filled with the sound of music, the aroma of street food with a host of businesses dotted across the streets.
Osu night market can also boast of popular food joints at night serving the enclave for many years. The Oxford Street has all kinds of restaurants, pubs, shopping malls, pharmaceuticals among others.
However, the night economy in Accra is not without its challenges. Security remains a primary concern, with the safety of patrons and business owners during late hours being paramount. To mitigate these concerns, there is a pressing need for increased police patrols and improved lighting systems in key areas.
As Accra continues to grow and evolve, the night economy will play an increasingly vital role in shaping the city’s economic and cultural landscape. The night is no longer just a time for rest, but a new frontier for business and creativity in Ghana’s bustling capital.
