Manchester City secured their seventh Community Shield with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in a thrilling encounter at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
For the second consecutive year, the Community Shield match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, leading to a high-stakes shootout. Last year, Arsenal emerged victorious in the same scenario, but City reversed the outcome this time around.
The first half was a tactical battle with both teams probing but unable to break the deadlock. Manchester City controlled possession, but Manchester United’s defence, led by Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans held firm against City’s attacking waves.
The game came to life in the 82nd minute when Argentina international Alejandro Garnacho, who had been lively since his introduction in the 61st minute, found the net for Manchester United. Garnacho received a precise pass on the right flank, cut inside, and delivered a low finish past Ederson to give United the lead.
City responded with urgency and equalised in the 89th minute. Oscar Bobb made a brilliant run down the right, delivering a perfect cross for Bernardo Silva. Silva outmuscled Facundo Pellistri to head in a crucial equaliser, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Manchester City triumph despite poor start
The shootout was nerve-wracking, with Manchester City and Manchester United both showcasing composure under pressure. Silva missed City’s opening penalty, while Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans also failed to convert for United.
Swiss defender Manuel Akanji proved to be the hero of the shootout. After both teams had traded successful penalties, Akanji scored the decisive spot-kick, securing a 7-6 win for Manchester City.
