Spain captain Álvaro Morata and Manchester City midfielder Rodri have been handed a one-match suspension by UEFA following their controversial celebration during Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.
The suspension comes after both players chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish” in front of thousands of fans in Madrid’s Cibeles Square on July 15, a gesture deemed provocative and disrespectful by the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA).
This means they are both ruled out of La Roja’s next game against Serbia next month.
The incident occurred as Spain celebrated their 2-1 triumph over England in the Euro 2024 final. The chanting by Morata and Rodri was seen as a political statement regarding Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of Spain. Spain has historically claimed sovereignty over Gibraltar, which has been under British rule since the 18th century.
The governing body cited the players’ actions for failing to adhere to the “general principles of conduct” and for bringing the sport into disrepute. UEFA’s statement read: “The players are suspended for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of decent conduct, and using sporting events for non-sporting manifestations.”
The GFA formally complained to UEFA about the players’ behaviour, describing it as “extremely provocative and insulting.” In their statement, the GFA emphasised that such conduct has no place in football, which should focus solely on sporting achievements rather than political statements.
Morata and Rodri instigated chant amid celebrations
During Spain’s victory parade in Cibeles Square, Rodri was visibly chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish,” while Morata joined in and encouraged the crowd to participate. This display was met with criticism due to its political nature, contrasting sharply with the celebratory and non-political atmosphere typically associated with such events.
Despite the controversy, Rodri was named Player of the Tournament for Euro 2024, highlighting his significant contribution to Spain’s success. The midfielder’s on-field performance was widely praised, though his post-match actions have overshadowed his achievements.
