Brazil delivered a stunning performance to thrash world champions Spain 4-1, securing a place in the women’s football final where they will face the United States.
This will be a repeat of the 2008 Olympic final, promising an exciting clash in Paris on Saturday.
Brazil took control early with an own goal by Irene Paredes, followed by a second goal from Gabi Portilho just before halftime, which left Spain reeling.
Adriana added a third for the South Americans, while Spain’s hopes were briefly revived when Duda Sampaio inadvertently scored an own goal.
Despite Spain’s attempts to mount a comeback, Brazil’s Kerolin sprinted clear during the first of 15 added minutes to score Brazil’s fourth goal.
Salma Paralluelo managed a late consolation goal for Spain, but it was not enough to alter the outcome.
Spain will now compete for the bronze medal against Germany in Lyon on Friday at 14:00.
With this victory, As Canarinhas is assured of matching their previous best Olympic performance, having won silver in 2004 and 2008, both times losing to the United States.
The final promises to be a high-stakes encounter between two of the most successful teams in Olympic women’s football history.
