Electorates in the Mpraeso Constituency say their vote in the December 7 elections will be informed by the prevailing social developments in the area.
The Constituency is notably one of the safest seats for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern Region with 51,195 voter population as at the time of 2020 elections.
The NPP has won the seat more since 1996 after a nationwide boycott of the 1992 parliamentary elections.
Davis Ansah Opoku alias OPK, who is the incumbent MP for the Constituency is seeking the mandate of the electorates for a second term in office, but his main contender from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Muhayadeen Adam Kaleem, is back in the race poised to win the seat after healing from a defeat in last elections.
However, the electorates in the Constituency say their voting in the December 7 polls will be informed by the prevailing developmental challenges in the area.
Adawso and Jerusalem are key farming and fishing communities but Roads connecting them pose serious threats to the commuting public.
The main road linking the area to Atibie and Mpraeso is also in its worse form. Attempts by government to have sections of the roads reconstructed to ease plights of commuters have not been successful as culverts for drains have been abandoned for years.
The current poor state of roads in the area, according to some voters, impedes commerce and even though robbery activities which used to be rampant on the stretch have been reduced through an intervention by the current administration.
“I can say that we now have police station awaiting commissioning. Police personnel have also been deployed on our roads so the frequent attack on market women by armed robbers have reduced. That is what this government has been able to do,” a voter said.
The Volta Lake separates Mpraeso and Afram Plains South constituencies. But the availability of a ferry makes access to both constituencies easier although, voters have concerns.
Another resident voter told 3news.com that, “the ferry has two engines in it but both are dysfunctional. We recently embarked on a protest to draw the authority’s attention to the situation, but there has not been any positive result.”
The electorates in Mpraeso are convinced to partake in the December 7 polls, but those whose livelihoods depend on fishing have concerns with premix fuel supply which they say is affecting their general standard of living.
It is clear that voters in Mpraeso are certain about their participation in the upcoming elections but their choice of a leader and representation in the legislature will be determined by who fixes their existing basic developmental challenges ahead of the election-day.
